A day without me

Howth
So last year I found myself on a trip to Dublin for work. A few gigs came on the radar and we decided to make a long weekend of it. Dublin is a party town and it didn't fail to disappoint on that front, although we did keep to the periphery of Temple Bar and that provided more than enough excitement for us.
I'll revisit Dublin on these pages at some point but this is a little aside that you may or may not have been aware of. Howth is a lovely day out from the shenanigans either side of the Liffey and it's also a great excuse to post some pictures of lighthouses.

Old Lighthouse, Howth, Dublin

Jump on the Dublin DART green line train north out of the centre of Dublin and take the fork to Howth Peninsula (as opposed to the other fork to Malahide - home to pop stars and incredible beaches but again, another time.)

After 40 minutes you'll arrive in Howth Harbour, home to a 200 year-old beautiful lighthouse and a not so beautiful modern replacement. The adjacent village is full of local shops selling the freshest local catch and there are an abundance of restaurants waiting to cook this fish for you, and let you swig it down with a smooth Guinness.

New Lighthouse, Howth, Dublin

The harbour walls are accessible to the public, but be warned, they are very exposed as we found when the large dark storm in the photograph below duly hit home as we arrived at the lighthouse. The rain was merciless, umbrellas useless. We got so wet it was actually quite comical!

Depending on how long you have available, either jump on a local bus or walk to the Summit Inn which is a nice pub to grab (another) Guinness (the Guinness family did live on the island) before heading to the well signposted summit (the clue's in the name).

Baily Lighthouse, Howth, Dublin

This vantage point is criss-crossed by a host of walks with such fabulous names as 'The Bog of Frogs Loop' and the 'Black Linn Loop'.
We headed to the coast, just a short distance away, to the breath-taking view of Baily Lighthouse on the 'Little Baily' outcrop. It really is worth coming out here for that coastal view alone.
A great day out from Dublin to walk off the Guinness and blow the cobwebs away.
