Burning Sky

Javea, Spain
Javea (or Xàbia) is a port town on the Costa Blanca positioned between Alicante and Valencia, and as such is easily accessible from both airports with less than a two hour drive from either.
It's a great base to explore the coast line of southern Spain, and it boasts two splendid lighthouses at either end of the town. The lighthouses at Cabo de San Antonio in the north and Cap de la Nau towards the south both perch proudly on dramatic outcrops looking out across the western Mediterranean to the Balearic Islands.

Javea, Costa Blanca, Spain

Javea spreads itself across several beaches, a port and a delightful Old Town. It's a good stomp to walk between them all but they are all serviced by a cheap, local bus service, and each area definitely warrants a few visits.

The beach and bars of the Arenal are probably most folk's first stop when they arrive in Javea, and it is probably one of the more picturesque and upmarket beach developments in Spain. The restaurants are plentiful and cover the full gamut of worldly cuisines. The Italian food is the standout on the Arenal whereas the local tapas and fish restaurants are the stars of the port and Old Town.

Harbour Lighthouse, Javea, Spain

The harbour at Javea is a busy working port and manages the balance between being just that and a great place to explore. Make sure you lunch at the local fisherman's cooperative, Cantina Lonja, which is something we try to do where ever we go. Eating fresh fish with a cold beer in sight of the fish hall and the sea, what more could you ask for as Rick Stein would say!
There's also a couple of small harbour lighthouses to bag.

Summer fires over the Cap de la Nau, Javea, Spain

When we visited Javea there was an outbreak of fires on the outskirts of the town due to the very hot weather, and the smoke was quite visible for miles around. For a period there was a constant stream of sea planes overhead, dramatically scooping water from the sea and ferrying it back to the source of the smoke clouds. Thankfully the fires were able to be contained.

Javea Old Town is a delight of cobbled streets, historic buildings, authentic bars, and great tapas restaurants. It is extremely welcoming and almost guarantees a lovely warm, Spanish evening out.

Parade, Javea Old Town, Spain

For an excellent day trip from Javea catch the boat to Denia, which is north along the coast around the Cabo de San Antonio. It's a lovely trip offering great views of the lighthouse high on the cape. Denia is another busy port town, boasting some great restaurants on the windy back streets. Walk off lunch with a stroll round the castle before catching the boat back to Javea.

Faro Cabo de San Antonio, Spain

There's more to come from Javea and the Costa Blanca as we start to explore the coast, and of course more lighthouses........
