Every end has a start

It's been a while......
Once we picked up the hire car in Quebec City (after visiting Toronto and Montreal), all plans to keep an on-line blog of our travel progress went out of the window.
There was just too much to see and do, and not enough time to do justice to what we were seeing and doing!
But my journal was kept up to date and I'll be revisiting a lot of the places we visited, the people we met, the stories we were told, and the photographs we took, over the next few months.

But first we have to come full circle now the trip is over.....
Our Canada tour was inspired by a friend creating a lovely wall hanging for us based on the lighthouse at West Point on Prince Edward Island, 6 years ago. We had to go and see it.

So we were very fortunate to visit the lighthouse during our time on PEI, and we actually finished our trip by staying in the lighthouse itself.
West Point Lighthouse is in the grounds of the Cedar Dunes Provincial Park and Campground, and is perfectly positioned on a long beach overlooking the Northumberland Strait.
Not for the first time on our trip to Canada our expectations were more than surpassed by the location and the people.
The lighthouse does have some attached ocean facing chalets but we opted for the Tower Room which, along with the Keeper's Quarters is located within the body of the lighthouse.
It was a great space in keeping with the lighthouse, with windows opening up to amazing views on three sides.

As the sun went down we walked to the recreational harbour.
You are limited for eateries, but the Catch is a perfectly functional, busy little restaurant, which serves some nice local craft beers to tourists and locals alike.

Later in the evening I took some shots of the lighthouse from the beach.
It was pitch black, bar the illumination from the lighthouse, and I was approached by a local chap who was walking the beach with some friends. He was very keen to show me how 'orbs' that are barely visible to the human eye can be viewed through your camera phone.
Apparently these circular 'light balls' are thought to be spheres of energy from the spiritual realm.
And yes, the lighthouse was swarming with them!
This tied in with his very proud claim that this was the 10th most haunted spot in Canada.

A good night's sleep for us then eh?

There was definitely was something about the lighthouse as we went back in, but that was probably more to do with the local craft beers.
We had the full run of the place for the night, and it was a very eerie, but incredible experience peering out at the stars from the green-light soaked lamp room!
Going to sleep, in a lighthouse almost on the beach, listening to the sea and the crashing of the waves was the most perfect end to our stay in Canada and something we'll never forget.x
